Pre or Post IBSC Conference Tour Options

Cairns, in Tropical North Queensland Australia, is blessed to be located between two natural wonders - the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage listed tropical rainforests. Delegates to the IBSC conference are encouraged to experience these and other natural attractions either before or after the conference and the information below should help you pick the right tour for you. Please be aware that September is the peak tourist season and advance bookings are highly recommended.

Cairns is also known as being the adventure capital of Australia for thrill seekers seeking sports such as white water rafting, sky diving, bungy jumping, parasailing and so on. Cairns is Australia’s top spot for learning to scuba dive or to start a live aboard scuba diving holiday.

Port Douglas is around an hours drive north of the city of Cairns and Cairns airport. The advantage of staying in Port Douglas either before or after the conference is that it has the charm of a small village located beside a beautiful beach yet there is plenty of fine dining and shopping to be enjoyed.

The Daintree National Park region is famous for being one of the oldest world heritage listed rainforests in the world. Just another 2 hours north of Port Douglas, the Daintree region is a ‘must-see’ for many visitors, which can be done either as a day tour or an overnight tour from Cairns or Port Douglas.

Cape Tribulation is a place within the Daintree National Park where most of the Daintree holiday accommodation is located, as this is where the rainforest meets the reef.

The Great Barrier Reef is the one single most visited attraction by visitors to Far North Queensland. One can take a boat, plane or helicopter to the reef and view the reef by snorkelling, scuba diving or via glass bottomed boat coral viewing tours.

Just a 45 minute boat ride or 10 minute scenic flight takes you to Green Island for the day where you can enjoy activities such as snorkeling, sea walker, glass bottom boats, scuba diving and much more. There is luxury resort on the island for those wishing to stay a few days.

A 45 minute flight south of Cairns will take you to the tropical Dunk Island, which is great for families and offers great value for money packages.

The exclusive Lizard Island is also a 60 minute flight north of Cairns and caters to a more up market clientele.

Fitzroy Island is located just 4km from the mainland of Cairns. Visit for a day and enjoy the activities or stay for a few nights at the luxury resort on the island.

Spend the day or camp overnight in the Frankland Islands, an uninhabited group of islands, which caters for a maximum number of 100 guests per day or 12 people for overnight camping.

Cairns is surrounded by mountain ranges. Approximately 1 to 1 ½ hours drive up the mountain range west of Cairns you will find yourself in the Cairns Highlands also known as the Atherton Tablelands.

The Cairns Highlands is home to world heritage listed rainforest, national parks, rivers, lakes and waterfalls. The Cairns Highlands is an ideal destination for bush walking, bird and wildlife tours, hot air ballooning or just lazing around and enjoying the scenery. Escape the hustle and bustle of city life by renting a campervan and enjoying the many sites at your own pace. If you are short on time take a nature and wildlife tour which will show you as much as possible in one or two days.

Cooktown is a historical town right by the sea and is the gateway to Cape York for the adventurous travelers wishing to reach the top of Australia. You will need at least two to three days to travel from Cairns to Cooktown and back by road.

The coastal road from Cairns to Cooktown is for 4WD only in some parts however the inland road to Cooktown is a normal road the entire way.

There are several ways of traveling to Cape York but it is advisable not to travel between December and April, as it is the wet season. The distance from Cairns to the tip of Cape York is over 1000km.

The quickest way to see Cape York would be to take a one to three day air tour. The best and easiest way to visit Cape York is on an organized tour. Organized Cape York Tours can be accommodated or camping tours. The last option is to take your own, or a hired four wheel drive vehicle to Cape York. This only advisable to people with off road driving experience, and to hire a four wheel drive campervan is the best option if you wish to self drive through this remote wilderness region.
